Just wondering all your thoughts on this. It's a question I've had in the back of my mind that I never really took the time to find out about it. My questions is why do you think the Lord said there are many mansions, that He is preparing a place for us. I just noticed, it doesn't say we each get our own as I've always heard, but what just struck me is it says IN MY FATHER'S HOUSE there are many mansions! Holy Moly! There are mansions within His house!!! WOW!
But why do you think God had that put in there? What does mansion mean back in the day it was written? I get the whole streets of gold...it shows that we no longer need it as well as no earthly riches are an issue any longer. We won't covet or be greedy...it just won't matter. But why a mansion? Just curious.
John 14:
14 “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.

Interesting question, gr8tful. Some versions of the bible say ...'there are many rooms." Maybe this is sort of abstract, but could it mean that all needs will be met and fulfilled as to that person's heavenly desires?

I don't know. I do know the Bible is written in such a way that each time you read it you get something more out of it. But this one I have taken just as it says, and never gave it more thought. Just put the questions aside until now. I think it has more meaning but what I don't know! I can't imagine needing our own mansion, I don't imagine us living in Heaven like we do here. Where we need such things. We won't need a kitchen as far as I know, other than the feast. We won't need bathrooms, I imagine we won't need sleep, I really don't want to have housework, so I don't know.
I hope someone has a better understanding of it than I do. I would do a search but I don't like reading all the different views and thoughts on a subject sometimes...cuz I know some of them are looney or so off base! Anyway...thanks Shiloh for your thoughts!

Good question, Gr8tful. I've thought a lot about this myself. Personally, I would want a kitchen. I love to cook. I've already said that I would cook my lasagna for whoever would like to come over to my heavenly home, plus my potato salad. Looking forward to that! So I definitely hope to get a kitchen. I know we won't have need for bathrooms or bedrooms like you said. Personally, I would like to have a balcony overlooking a lake. And a porch with a porch swing. And I would love to have my living room decorated in shades of lavender. (I don't want much, huh?) As you can see, I've thought about this a lot. No scriptural basis for it, of course, just the desires of my heart. Yes, along with Shiloh, I've seen the interpretation of "many rooms" also. We could just have a big room where we could have lots of places to sit and fellowship with each other. And a large dining room for us to eat together. Anyway, these are my thoughts/hopes/desires.

hmmm....yeah ladies, rooms sound more possible doesn't it! Again "in my Father's house there are many mansions" - if His house has mansion INSIDE of HIS house, how huge His must be!! I know what you mean re: wanting a view of a lake and porch swing, but I just don't imagine we'll have that 'earthly' desire once we're there. Once we are in His presence, what could be more amazing than that?! The colors will be much more brilliant I am sure and the smells and just everything! We can't even fathom I am sure!! I don't know, I just think our ways will be soooo far from us once we're in our Heavenly bodies. But then again I suppose it can't 'hurt' to think what we want re: the beauty in Heaven while we're in our earthly body, huh! It's just going to be beyond amazing, that's all I know!!!

Oh, yeah, I am sure that we are going to be filled with so much joy just being with the Lord that it won't matter where we live. I'm just looking forward so much to being there with Him like the rest of you.

Well I am glad there will be no bathrooms to clean. I hope that the kitchen and dining rooms are shared so that those of us who like to eat can enjoy what those of you who like to cook will make!

Oh I hear ya Peace! NO bathrooms to clean, nothing will get dirty or dusty from what I would imagine! But yeah, that would be kinda neat for those who want to cook, maybe even those who wanted to but never could will get to there? All the rest of us could enjoy their dishes! BUT WAIT....honestly now, it just occurred to me, I don't think there will be meat eating!!! If the lion and the lamb are side by side, no one's eating no one! hmmmm....That just leaves desserts!!! YAY!!! SHELAYNE, GUESS WHAT!!! CAKE!!!

Yeah, Peace, that will be fun. Like I said, ya'll come over and I will be excited to cook a meal for you guys! Gr8tful, as far as meat goes, I've been to Chinese vegetarian restaurants that have pork and shrimp dishes that are made out of vegetables that kind of do taste like the real thing. I'm sure that in heaven we will have meat vegetarian dishes that will be way better than the meat dishes we have over here. Yep, about mansions, the Bible doesn't say much about them, so all we can do is speculate.

The word mansions is from the Latin translation, not the Greek. The Greek is " dwelling places". Some scholars think that verse is not future, but right now, in that we are indwelt with the Holy Spirit. " My Father's House" refers to the Temple. When Jesus died, He prepared that place, meaning "the way" for us to be reconciled to The Father, He sent us the Comforter, who does reside with us. We are the Temple for the Holy Spirit. Jesus is with us always. That is what some believe that means. I was trying to " follow" that explanation, but it wasn't as clear cut as they were trying to make it, though it is an interestiing take.
I will look at the different commentaries that we have, just to see what they say. It is a great question.
And I do believe Gr8tful mentioned CAKE!

Thank you Shelayne, that is an interesting thought but yeah, from the way I read what Christ said, it sounds future...not right then. Looking forward to any other thoughts you come across! And Yeah, I did say cake....awesome thought, huh!!

Sorry, what I was eluding to was this:
Isaiah 64:4 For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside thee, what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him.

Hey, Leeza and Gr8tful. You two are getting a little demanding aren't you? I bet there will be colors there that we have never even seen before. Shelayne, we know there will be a New Jerusalem for the church b/c the Bible even gives the dimensions. The earth wouldn't hold it b/c it's that big. Guest, it would be great if you joined. I love that verse you posted. I'm not picky......this'll probably be my mansion and I'll even have my own throne.

Ummm, Shiloh, remember, we're talking about when we're in Heaven and I'm going to bring tea to your 'mansion'. I, huh, don't think, that huh, stealing, is say, the best idea, up there! Ya know? I might have to borrow your 'get out of' card otherwise! Tell ya what, I'll go by Leeza's who will be cooking and baking and bring you a big ol' slice of Angel Food cake w/tons of whip cream and strawberries! How's that? Maybe some super awesome melted chocolate to dip the strawberries in too!!!! That outta work! PS - you're only 4 more away!! I'm logging off soon so not sure I'll be able to celebrate w/you - BUT if it's all dependent on you I should be bringing that tea over tomorrow! haha

Okay, SOOOO, today at bible study I brought up this very question re: mansions. I then said, I really don't think we're going to need one, I don't want a kitchen, bathroom, vacuuming, dusting, any of that! The woman leading our study explained it I thought pretty well! She said that, as you all had said, "in My Father's house there are many rooms". In that day, that language, the term is rooms.
And the reason it was spoken that way, is back then families lived together. When people got engaged, the bridegroom would go build a room on the house of his parents I believe it is. It had to be approved by the Father before it was considered ready. Once He approved it, then He would tell the bride groom, "go and get her". (Which would be the parable of the virgins). SO I thought that makes a lot of sense and how beautiful is that!!! It's regarding the Bride and Bridegroom!! Isn't that cool!

Ohhhh, that IS very cool, gr8tful. I like when people compare versions of their bibles and go back to the Greek text.

So do I Shiloh. That's why I always thought the Jews that become Christians really have a depth of understanding right away that we don't. We kinda learn it slowly but they would know right off what that scripture meant. Growing up they learned the Jewish way and so a lot of symbolism and customs that go right past us, they would recognize right away. I could be wrong, but that's the way it seems to me.

Well, yes, when you look at the ancient Jewish wedding customs in light of the Rapture of the Body of Christ, it is so awesome! The parallels are just amazing. It lines up perfectly, and yet another reason to believe in a Pre-trib Rapture.

I'll admit, it DOES parallel. But I go back and forth on that one for a lot of reasons. In a nutshell, that was meant for the Jews and not the church, being that we are seperate. We are no longer Jew or Gentile (as Paul said) and are a people called unto Himself.
