I have a question. How do you know if a promise in the Bible can apply to you personally? Some people claim that any promise found in the Bible can be applied to a believer. The salvation promises are clearly for all people, but everything else leaves me confused. A couple of examples- What about promises of protecion?, Or of blessing those that tithe? etc... I try to read the verses as they are and not take them out of context but I get confused. Are we only to claim the promises made directly to the church? Any help would be appreciated:)

Great question!! From what I understand many promises in the Old Testament are promises to the Jews. NT, many of the promises are for all. I believe it depends on the context of the scripture of course. But honestly, I take promises in the NT for me for the most part! I mean, who wouldn't! hahaha Anyway, my take is not 'deep' but that's how I see it.

I think some of the promises in the Psalms, Proverbs, and Ecclesiastes are applicable to Christians. I think the blessings written in the books in the NT apply, except for the Gospels - I think some of the promises of John apply, but we can't assume that all promises in the Gospels apply. I don't know how good this link is for you Chrissy, but I thought I would put it on: www.wholesomewords.org/etexts/chafer/saved.html Scroll down it, don't just be put off by the first part. It has a pretty exciting and convenient cheat list.

Thank you Gr8ful and Elizabeth for taking time to answer me:) ! I checked out the link too. I'm so thankful that I have people to take my Bible questions to! I hope nobody minds that I will probably have many more:) Tim and I were saying yesterday that it would be so nice to live near you all and that we'd definitely be going to Benjamin's church if we lived close to him:) It's nice to have access to solid teaching!

I know Chrissy! It would be cool if we all lived nearby. But then again, maybe the beauty is in NOT knowing each other in 'real time'? Who knows? All I know is, I firmly believe the Lord has brought each and everyone here for a purpose and a reason and to know each other. I feel it's such a unique and special bond!! We genuinely care for each other, are concerned about each other and share info we probably wouldn't share w/just anyone. The Lord is sooo very good to bring us all together. I find it soo odd that I can care about, love, trust and share with friends that I will never meet in this life. Only God can do that in someone like me who is so NOT like that!! Again, He is funny about having us do things we are NOT open to do in ways!!! That's when I know it's God leading....because I will drag my feet on obeying for awhile every time! He is so patient with me. Making the step to go online and become a member was HUGE!! My family about fell over when I told them. And then for me to talk to a few on the phone!! That about put them over the edge! I am the only 'hold out' when it comes to this kind of stuff. BUT it's the only place I do this....I did go to fb about a yr ago but don't like it much other than to pm my family. Anyway....I've told this story a gazillion times, but to me it shows this is a special place!

Chrissy, I found this: RIGHTLY DIVIDING - July 31, 2015 "If [since] ye, then, be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God " (Colossians 3:1). The Christian cannot thrive but in his environment, "hidden with Christ in God" (Colossians 3:3). "Let us rightly divide the Word of truth. To go back to the Psalms for proper Christian experience is to lose the savor of grace and to breathe legalism; it is to climb down from heaven to earth. If the Psalms are really understood, they yield a harvest of blessing to the soul; but if misunderstood and misapplied, as alas! is too often done, only loss can result." -W.K. "If we confound the Jewish spirit of the Psalms with the Epistles, and take it as the expression of our feelings, we falsify Christianity. No doubt I shall find lovely confidence in the Lord in respect of His government of this world, the comfort of forgiveness, the happy confidence of integrity of heart, and remarkable prophecies of Christ; but where shall I find heavenly hopes, or my union with the glorified Lord Jesus, or even the out-flowings of divine grace, as manifested in His person on earth, or the blessed affection which flows from hearts acquainted with these? "Where is the blessed Spirit of adoption? Every saint knows the touching expression of piety which the Psalms furnish to us; but no intelligent believer can turn from the writings of John and Paul to the Psalms without finding himself in an altogether different atmosphere. " "Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth " (Colossians 3:2). Promises made. Promised kept. Promises not kept. Promises remaining to be kept...
Often in my experience, Chrissy, my sense of a promise made, a promise kept, a promise not yet kept, or a promise broken, are all in the eye(s) of the beholder(s). God never changes. God made promises. God will keep every one of His promises.
The big problem in my mind, dear, is often our faith in God. Satan and his minions always try to destroy our faith since it is the victory that overcomes the world. Tears down strongholds.
To start enumerating and systematically "claiming" things promise by promise, categorizing, shuffling, sorting, doing individual risk assessments, post action evaluation and so forth, futilely attempts to lay God out within some kind of grid. Got him in the box now... Watch when I push this joystick this certain way what happens... Oh, darn!
Some promises are dreadful, yet they are promised by God nonetheless. One example is, "In this world you will have trouble..." Okay, thank you Jesus. I'm going to think on that one a little while longer before I claim it. Was that to the Jews, Jesus?...
Claiming promises in my experience with some sincere Christian friends, may be little more than performing his mantra du jour, exercised to make him think he has actually generated some faith, yet he may not actually have done too much more than sold himself his own shaky little-faith thoughts in a mind game he fancies.
Is God absolutely Sovereign? Does God actually love you more than you will ever be able to comprehend? Is even faith itself a gift of God? (Eph 2:8) Unequivocally yes!! Any promise in the Scriptures will always, by God's very own Being, be: "Yes, that's a promise. And it's just as it says."
This probably does not help too much, Chrissy, relative to the specific questions and details of them which you posed, but unequivocal is what they are, regardless of context and application. I'm not holding out my own faith, but I'm old and kinda' left-brained (logic) about the question. The right-brain (feeling) drags me every which way.
Like Job said quite matter of factly without any ifs, ands or buts: "The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away. Blessed be the Name of the Lord."

Very good point, Danāŗ! Thank you. Your answer reminds me of Isaiah 55:8-9 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
