Well, as I have mentioned before, I have been reading the Old and New Testament from beginning to end. I am now on 1 Corinthians, and I have a question on 1 Corinthians 3:17, which says, "If any man destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him, for the temple of God is holy, and that is what you are."
I was reading 1 Corinthians 3:17 in the Amplified Bible, it explains that the temple referred to as "false doctrine", as it is written, "if anyone does hurt to God’s temple or corrupts it [with false doctrines] or destroys it, God will do hurt to him and bring him to the corruption of death and destroy him. For the temple of God is holy (sacred to Him) and that [temple] you [the believing church and its individual believers] are".
But my understanding is that the temple means our bodies, as stated in 1 Corinthians 6:19. "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?"
Okay, so here is my question. What does it mean that if we destroy the temple of God, is it talking about us harming our bodies with things that are not good for us, like drugs or cigarettes? And if we do, does that mean that God will destroy us? Or is it talking about corrupting ourselves with false doctrine, as it is written in the Amplified Bible? And suppose it does mean false doctrine? What about Christians who are Seventh Day Adventists, Roman Catholics, in the World Wide Church of God, etc? Is God going to destroy them? (Through death, I suppose.)
Any insight into this, anyone?

Well Christians are covered by grace, so things we do to our bodies, are forgiven.
I think people(tares) who teach, or believe false doctrine, are the people this verse is specifically meant for.

I've wondered this very thing too Leeza. Could it mean our bodies or doctrines, both? Or the churches? But I think it may be as Elizabeth said, the teachings that are corrupted, those who teach such junk and lead people astray to believe such stuff. Like it says, 'if anyone does hurt to God’s temple or corrupts it [with false doctrines] or destroys it, God will do hurt to him and bring him to the corruption of death and destroy him. For the temple of God is holy (sacred to Him) and that [temple] you [the believing church and its individual believers] are". Reading this it's as if He is saying 'if anyone does hurt to God's temple (to us believers, our temples w/filling w/false doctrine)......if anyone fills the people's minds w/falsehoods, they will be accountable for that! Same as do not keep the little children from coming unto Me.

Okay, so do you think that verse was meant for those who teach false doctrine that lead people from the grace of God to the works of the law?

Yes quite possibly. Anyone who brings harm on them by teaching this stuff. Not sure why the term God's temple is used. Do we know why? Since we are God's temple I assume it's saying anyone who teaches falsely to His Child, aka His temple.

I think it would be anyone of the TARES teaching or practising false doctrine. I don't think it necessarily has to do with works, but it likely does.
I think Christians may be involved in false doctrine for a time - like cults, but they will come out of it by the grace of God. They will be forgiven. That's how I see it anyway.

As she stands there with a cigarette in her hand, speaking in a British accent..hahahahaha I'm so sorry. I couldn't help myself on that one.
I have to agree with Liz on this. Grace wouldn't be grace otherwise and none of us would make it to heaven if it were up to us to save ourselves or overcome anything at all. There would be no need for our Savior and that would mean Jesus died in vain. That's my short explanation, but you know what I mean.

I think the context is the important (and missing) element here, and you've all hit the nail on the head filling that in.
1 Corinthians 3 is about a pretty specific topic: Paul is talking about the division within the church - that the Corinthians had adhered to specific teachers, and not to Christ Himself.
By verse 10, he's talking about those in Corinth who were "building a foundation... other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ" - and it's in response to THAT that he talks about judgment.
So... essentially he's continuing that building metaphor. He moves from those who are building up (verses 10-13), to those who are tearing down (verse 16-17). What he's talking about here is those who build upon incorrect foundations (12) finding that their building cannot and will not stand - for it will be burned in judgment (14-15), and torn down by the hand of God Himself (16-17).
The point? The gospel is very simple... and we can build on no other foundation. Any other foundation will compromise the building and result in a desecrated temple; and even that which is not burned up itself will be torn down by the hand of God - because only that which is built on Christ will last.

What a good answer, Benjamin. I didn't pick up on the building of the foundation part. I can see now how that ties in with verse 17. Thank you!

You know Benjamin you are so smart and so serious and studious at times! That I hate to show you your typos, but well....aside from that good point. You know... I'm a moderator, and I could make it look like your post never happened

That's right, he can just tear down our posts. Don't worry, Benjamin. They have me and Leeza to pick on with the typos.
Benjamin: The point? The gospel is very simple... and we can build on no other foundation.
That's exactly it. I have always believed the message of the gospel is supposed to be easy to understand so that anyone can understand it. When I don't understand something, I'll research it ask others because I know I must be taking something out of context.
Good heavens woman, are you under the influence of something, or what?!

Because he can.
Hey if anyone doesn't get teased on here, that's when you have to worry and it probably means they don't like you very much. I remember at my spiritual mother's husband's funeral, Norm Cohen, one of his sons got up and did the eulogy and he said, "If he didn't tease you, he probably didn't like you." I thought to myself, "Man! He must have loved me!" He was constantly teasing me. He was Jewish but accepted the Lord into his heart about 2 years before he died. I was so happy.

Oh, that is so true! It is definitely a sign that if you are teased around here, that people love you. It says something about a person who gets defensive and touchy when they are teased.

Yeah that's true enough! If you get teased it shows love and acceptance! You're right I would be worried if I WASN'T teased! That's really great your friend came to know the Lord! That was a happy day, huh!
