Being the old{ish} fogey that I am, I'm not really familiar with the world of Hip-Hop, Rap or whatever else fits in that genre. But I stumbled upon a Dr. Phil interview with Rapper DMX that I actually found interesting. If you want the gist of why I'm posting this, then watch from the 8:30 mark to around 11:30 and you'll understand why I was pleasantly surprised.

Well, that is refreshing!!..I of course don't know much about Rap except that the young people are really into it, I am glad he's rapping for the Lord, I love the way the Lord works in using the medium in which to connect to this young generation, because they look up to these Artists and try to emulate them. What a blessing.

I like the way talked about his Mom, even though she probably wasn't the best of mothers. God bless him for his testimony.
I don't think though, this type of music is Godly.

Yeah, I don't know. I'm vaguely familiar with DMX's music - both before and after his conversion... and while I wouldn't argue that he's not a Christian (I can't make that call), his music seems to be fairly typical of a vein of "Christianity" where the name of Jesus is nothing more than a self-affirmation ritual, rather than anything deeper or more meaningful. If you listen to his music (and I don't recommend that you do), you'll hear him talking a lot about how he knows that he can "overcome everything in Jesus' name" and how he'll crush Satan and conquer, he'll never give up, and so on and so forth. You'll have to insert your own expletives to fill out the rest of the picture.
He's one of those "no weapon formed against me shall prosper" types (he repeats this phrase a lot, actually, in several songs). So... yes. It seems like a self-serving form of Christianity rather than anything truly meaningful - or at least, that's what comes across in his music.

Heck, I was just surprised to hear a famous rapper say he was a Christian, let alone rap to Christian lyrics. Might we be getting just a wee bit picky? Consider his audience. Edit: I just read up on DMX and I'm guessing he was playing to his Dr. Phil audience. In other words, disregard my last comment

Personally, RAP isn't my thing, but think of this. We can't judge his motives and who knows what kids he can reach through those lyrics? I'd rather (if I had to) listen to lyrics like that instead of some of those RAP songs that contain nothing BUT expletives. Morningstar, don't lie. I KNOW you walk around the house, snapping your fingers, doing some break dancing moves and karaoke with your grandson and also while you're cleaning.

Oh, Morningstar, so you're one of those drivers whose car makes every other car around them vibrate at stoplights? I always wondered about the people who drove those cars, now I can say I know one

I'd rather (if I had to) listen to lyrics like that instead of some of those RAP songs that contain nothing BUT expletives. ...his lyrics ARE full of expletives. The first gospel song he released as a single, "Lord, give me a sign", has plenty of swearing in it.

This man reminds me of a baby Christian - full of zeal without knowledge - Proverbs 19:2, NET - "It is dangerous to have zeal without knowledge, and the one who acts hastily makes poor choices."
I can only hope that his profanity-laced songs are a factor of needing to be sanctified rather than operating under the guise of "Christian liberty".
While it is a good thing to spread the Word of Christ, I fear people like DMX have too low a view of the Son of God. Christ is not our "homie". It is the FEAR of the Lord that is the beginning of knowledge - Proverbs 1:7. Knowing Him, understanding His majesty, comprehending the scope of His Glory, THAT is what "fearing" the Lord is all about, seeing Him high and lifted up, with the earth as His footstool.
That said, unless your sanctification is on fast-forward, it takes a lifetime for God to smooth out the rough spots on our character to resemble Christ. I say give this brother in Christ a few years (if the Lord tarries) and see where his heart lies after a good period of sanctification.

Well then, I take that back. I didn't listen to the whole song. Shows you how much I know about RAP music.
