An excerpt from my ebook, Typology Light On the End Times
Joseph
Joseph, Jacob's eleventh son, born of Rachel, is likely the best single type of Christ. Isaac is very like Christ also.
Joseph married and had two sons before the 7 years of famine in Egypt and Israel (which can be compared to the 7 year Tribulation), so Joseph's wife and children were together, with him in the royal palace during those years. The Israelites were sustained, then fully restored after the 7 years.
The story clearly suggests the Rapture of believers before the 7 years of the Time of Jacob's Trouble, the Tribulation.
Joseph is honored in Hebrews 11 as a person of faith.
Joseph was sold into slavery by his older brothers, taken to Egypt and rose to a place of great power, serving Pharaoh as his top overseer.
Pharaoh of Egypt had a dream of 7 fat cattle then 7 thin cattle which Joseph interpreted. Pharaoh chose Joseph to oversee his kingdom, and Joseph's wisdom from God led to preservation of Both Egypt and Israel in a seven year famine. Joseph advised storing grain enough to last 7 years, which was done.
During the time of famine, Joseph's brothers came to Egypt to buy food for their father Jacob and their families in Israel, and eventually the whole family was united in Egypt, and in time Israel departed Egypt.
Joseph restored his brothers to himself with love and joy, just as Jesus will deal with His brothers in the Tribulation, "the time of Jacob's trouble." (Gen. 41).
Joseph's full brother Benjamin received extra portions of grain and garments, more than once, at Joseph's command. Jacob spoke mysterious words of prophecy about his son Benjamin.
Benjamin is like the Messianic Jews. During the time when Joseph was thought to be dead, Benjamin was a blessing to Jacob..
In Joseph's story, his wife Asenath and sons were together, safe in the palace during the 7 years of famine, and compare to the Church, safe in heaven. Joseph's story clearly portrays the Tribulation. The revelation of Christ to all of his brothers, and the time of Christ glorified and blessing His Father and restoring his brothers.
Joseph, a type of Christ, was his father's favorite son. He suffered at the hands of his brothers, ruled, saved Egypt and his family in time of great need, and was reconciled to his brothers.
There are similarities between the way Potiphar's wife treated Joseph and the way Israel treated Jesus at His first coming. Potiphar's wife falsely accused Joseph, took his garment, claimed he attacked her and caused Joseph to be imprisoned for two years. Israel also falsely accused Jesus, caused Him to be jailed, and His robe was taken from Him.
Gen. 41:50 And unto Joseph were born two sons before the 7 years of famine came, which Asenath the daughter of Potipherah priest of On bare unto him.
The words Jacob spoke over Joseph:
Gen. 49:22-25 22 Joseph is a fruitful bough, even a fruitful bough by a well; whose branches run over the wall: 23 The archers have sorely grieved him, and shot at him, and hated him: 24 But his bow abode in strength, and the arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob; (from thence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel:) 25 Even by the God of thy father, who shall help thee; and by the Almighty, who shall bless thee with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lieth under, blessings of the breasts, and of the womb:
The words of blessing which Moses spoke over Joseph:
Deut. 33:13-17 13 And of Joseph he said, Blessed of the LORD be his land, for the precious things of heaven, for the dew, and for the deep that coucheth beneath, 14 And for the precious fruits brought forth by the sun, and for the precious things put forth by the moon, 15 And for the chief things of the ancient mountains, and for the precious things of the lasting hills, 16 And for the precious things of the earth and fulness thereof, and for the good will of him that dwelt in the bush: let the blessing come upon the head of Joseph, and upon the top of the head of him that was separated from his brethren. 17 His glory is like the firstling of his bullock, and his horns are like the horns of unicorns: with them he shall push the people together to the ends of the earth: and they are the ten thousands of Ephraim, and they are the thousands of Manasseh.
The word 'precious,' spoken 5 times, points to spiritual things which the Almighty esteems so.
Clarence Larkin, in his book, Dispensational Truth, says:
"Joseph was "beloved" of his father, so was Jesus. Joseph was sent unto his brethren, so was Jesus. Joseph's brethren refused to receive him, so did the brethren of Jesus. Joseph was sold by his brethren, so was Jesus. Joseph was unjustly accused and condemned, so was Jesus. Joseph was buried in prison, so was Jesus in the Tomb of Joseph. [Joseph of Arimathea.] Joseph was resurrected from prison and exalted to sit with Pharaoh on his throne, so Jesus was resurrected and exalted to sit on His Father's Throne. Joseph on the throne became the dispenser of bread to starving Egypt, so Jesus on His Father's Throne is the "Bread of Life" for a perishing world. After Joseph was exalted he got a Gentile bride, so Jesus will get a Gentile Bride-THE CHURCH.
After Joseph got his bride, his brethren suffered famine and came to him for corn. After Jesus get His Bride, His brethren, the Israelites, will turn to Him during the time of "Jacob's Trouble," the "Great Tribulation," for relief.
Joseph knew his brethren the first time, but they did not know him, so Jesus knew His brethren when He came the first time but they knew him not.
Joseph made himself known to his brethren when they came the "Second time," so Jesus will be recognized by the Jews when He comes the SECOND TIME.
After Joseph's revelation of himself to his brethren, they go forth to proclaim that he is alive and the "saviour of the world," so when Jesus reveals Himself to His brethren the Jews they will proclaim Him alive and the SAVIOUR OF MANKIND.
Joseph then established his brethren and their families in the "land of Goshen," so Jesus will re-establish the Jews in the LAND OF PALESTINE." [End of Larkin's notes.]
Bill MacDonald found many points of comparison, that Joseph and Jesus were both beloved of their father:... Both Joseph and Jesus were envied and hated without a cause:... Both Joseph and Jesus are called "a root out of dry ground:... Both Joseph and Jesus foretold that one day they would rule:... Joseph and Jesus were accused of being a dreamer, or 'beside himself:... Both Joseph and Jesus were rejected and condemned to die:... Both Joseph and Jesus were stripped of their clothing:... Both Joseph and Jesus were thrown into a pit (alone, forsaken):... Both Joseph and Jesus were sold for silver into the hands of gentiles:... Both Joseph and Jesus were raised from the pit:... Both Joseph and Jesus became a servant:... Regarding both Joseph and Jesus, everything they did prospered:... Both Joseph and Jesus resisted temptation:... Both Joseph and Jesus were falsely accused:... Both Joseph and Jesus were numbered with transgressors:... Both Joseph and Jesus promised deliverance to a condemned man:... Both Joseph and Jesus foretold the future accurately:.., Both Joseph and Jesus proved to be a great counsellor:... Both Joseph and Jesus were promoted to honor and glory and given a new name:... Regarding both Joseph and Jesus all people commanded to bow to him:... Both Joseph and Jesus provided for all in need:... Regarding both Joseph and Jesus, his people did not recognize him:... Both Joseph and Jesus allowed his brothers to suffer a period of tribulation:... Both Joseph and Jesus had revelation and reconciliation:... [End of MacDonald's notes.]
Asenath, wife of Joseph
Asenath, the Gentile wife of Joseph, is a type of the Church. Joseph married her and two sons were born to them before the 7 year famine, a type of the Tribulation. (Gen. 41:50). Joseph's wife is protected in their home, as her husband is in power over Pharoah's kingdom.
Asenath bore her husband two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, who may be types of believers. Manasseh reveals believers in the Church age, and Ephraim is a picture of Jewish believers in the end times. Ephraim received the patriarchal blessing from Jacob, yet is prophesied to be "fruitful in the land of his affliction" and mention is made of "the ten thousands of Ephraim" and the "thousands of Manasseh." (Deut. 17) The 144,000 believing Jews of endtime Israel are like Ephraim and will produce great numbers of believers in Messiah Jesus.
Joseph was in many ways like Christ, and Asenath is a foreshadow of the protected, raptured Church, safe with Christ. Asenath was with Joseph and their sons in the palace, the place of power, during the 7 years of famine.
Manasseh, older son of Joseph
Manasseh, older son of Joseph, Manasseh had son Machir who had son Gilead. Manasseh was blessed, but Ephraim received the patriarchal, double blessing by Jacob.
Manasseh is a type of the believers of the Church age, born first in time, while Ephraim is like the end time Jews who believe and are to produce more.
Ephraim, younger son of Joseph
Ephraim, the younger son who received the patriarchal blessing by the right hand of Jacob. Joseph told his father that his right hand should be on Manasseh, but Jacob kept his right hand on Ephraim. (Gen. 48:17-19)
Obad. 1:18 And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble, and they shall kindle in them, and devour them; and there shall not be any remaining of the house of Esau; for the LORD hath spoken it.
Joseph's younger son Ephraim was prophesied over by the dying Jacob in Egypt.
The name of Manasseh, firstborn of Joseph, means "forgetting" or "causing to forget." The birth of Joseph's firstborn, Manasseh, brought joy to Joseph helping him to forget the time of his suffering and rejection. "Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh: For God, said he, hath made me forget all my toil, and all my father's house," Gen. 41:51.
Gen. 41:52 "And the name of the second called he Ephraim: For God hath caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction."
The land of Joseph's affliction was Egypt, a type of the world.
Moses spoke words of blessing about Ephraim and Manasseh:
Deut. 33:13 And of Joseph he said, Blessed of the LORD be his land, for the precious things of heaven, for the dew, and for the deep that coucheth beneath,... 17 His glory is like the firstling of his bullock, and his horns are like the horns of unicorns: with them he shall push the people together to the ends of the earth: and they are the ten thousands of Ephraim, and they are the thousands of Manasseh.
Genesis 49:22, Joseph is a fruitful bough, even a fruitful bough by a well; whose branches run over the wall.
The words "branches run over the wall" bring to mind Jesus' outreach to the Gentiles. The vine that runs over the wall might be compared to those outside of Judaism, and Jesus' outreach to all people.
The term 'ash heaps' was noted as I did searches, and ashes were used as fertilizer to cause abundant plant growth. (In the name Bethlehem Ephrata, the word ephrata means "fruitful" also.)
I checked pictures of proper pruning of grapevines, and many reveal that the trunk is allowed to have two arms. These arms divide at the crown, and each arm is allowed to have branches called "spurs" and "cordons." These burst into heavy growth after severe pruning.
Joseph wisely prepared for a seven year period of famine which is like the Tribulation.
Joseph's sons can be compared to the two arms, branches, on a fruitful vine.
Joseph's sons both inherited, and each became a tribe in Israel.
Manasseh is a type of the Church and Ephraim is a type of Jewish believers of the end times, after the Rapture of the Church. Elisha received a double blessing also.
Joseph's sons were with their father during the seven years, protected in the time of famine and want, and the born again believers in Christ will be with their Father during the seven year Tribulation, in heaven.
Gen. 41:50 And unto Joseph were born two sons before the years of famine came, which Asenath the daughter of Potipherah priest of On bare unto him.
The tribes of Manasseh and Ephraim received the same full inheritance as the eleven sons of Jacob. Jacob says about Joseph's sons, "They .... are mine: as Reuben and Simeon they shall be mine." Gen. 48:5.
The double portion inheritance would have gone to Jacob's firstborn Reuben but for his transgression.
Heb. 2:13 And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me.
This verse is speaking about Jesus, as revealed in verses 9 through 13.
Hosea has much about how God loves Ephraim, and contains prophecies:
Hos. 11:1-9 1 When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt. 2 As they called them, so they went from them: they sacrificed unto Baalim, and burned incense to graven images. 3 I taught Ephraim also to go, taking them by their arms; but they knew not that I healed them.... 9 I will not execute the fierceness of mine anger, I will not return to destroy Ephraim: for I am God, and not man; the Holy One in the midst of thee: and I will not enter into the city.
The Lord's vine, Israel, is spoken of in Isaiah 5:
Isa. 5:1-16 1 Now will I sing to my wellbeloved a song of my beloved touching his vineyard. My wellbeloved hath a vineyard in a very fruitful hill: 2 And he fenced it, and gathered out the stones thereof, and planted it with the choicest vine, and built a tower in the midst of it, and also made a winepress therein: and he looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes. 3 And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem, and men of Judah, judge, I pray you, betwixt me and my vineyard. 4 What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it? wherefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapes? 5 And now go to; I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up; and break down the wall thereof, and it shall be trodden down: 6 And I will lay it waste: it shall not be pruned, nor digged; but there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it. 7 For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant: and he looked for judgment, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry.
Luke 20:13, 15 13 Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence him when they see him. 15 So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them?
John 15:5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
Zech. 8:12-15 12 For the seed shall be prosperous; the vine shall give her fruit, and the ground shall give her increase, and the heavens shall give their dew; and I will cause the remnant of this people to possess all these things. 13And it shall come to pass, that as ye were a curse among the heathen, O house of Judah, and house of Israel; so will I save you, and ye shall be a blessing: fear not, but let your hands be strong. 14For thus saith the LORD of hosts; As I thought to punish you, when your fathers provoked me to wrath, saith the LORD of hosts, and I repented not: 15 So again have I thought in these days to do well unto Jerusalem and to the house of Judah: fear ye not.
There is also an evil vine, referred to in Deuteronomy:
Deut. 32:32-33 32 For their vine is of the vine of Sodom, and of the fields of Gomorrah: their grapes are grapes of gall, their clusters are bitter: 33 Their wine is the poison of dragons, and the cruel venom of asps.
See The Final Harvests, the Sickles and the Vine of the Earth, (for the grapes of gall, the winepress), under Part IV The Seven Feasts of the Lord.
