A Dog's Purpose According to a Six Year Old This appeared in the San Fransicso Globe, and it will leave a lump in your throat. It will also leave you in wonder at the way children see animals and the world. click here

But then what about turtles? Aren't there some turtles that live longer than a human? In the beginning people used to live a looong time, though, longer than any animal, I think.
I also don't know why the parents would want the child to watch the dog be given an injection and then die.
The objective you had in sharing this was cute, though, Elizabeth.

Here's the explanation about turtles, Brotherjohn: Turtles are aloof and dispassionate. Given such a socially difficult handicap they take a very long time indeed to learn to be "nice," unlike that sweet old family dog with cancer.
The point about being with the dog when it died was undoubtedly to solidify the concept of "gone." "Dead." Really not a bad concept for even a six-year-old to begin to apprehend firsthand. Death is quite natural, well at least for the next few days...
Maybe another practical reason turtles live so long is that every time a vet tries to give the turtle an injection the needle bends or breaks.
By the way, Liz and Brotherjohn: Hi! I'm on vacation for two weeks, during which time I'm hoping we are at long last caught up to meet the Lord in the air. Anyway, I have some time this morning to post. I hope Brotherjohn that you don't wish I'd just gone back to work. :-)
Love, ybiC, SG / MWS / Dan
PS - See you soon?

How heartwarming this story was. Looking at the picture of this little boy with his dog was touching. BJ: I thought the same thing as you about having a 6-year-old present at the death of his dog. I would not do that as a parent either. Each parent decides in how they raise their family so I am sure others would agree with this.

I wouldn't have one of my kids watch that either but his response was very wise. Very adult for a little boy. How heart-breaking though. The thought of him losing their doggy.
LOL! That's very true, Dan. That was my same thought. It's not like you can snuggle with a turtle. I had turtles as a kid. Trouble is, I always bought the sickly ones because I felt so sorry for them and I was convinced I could nurse them back to health. They used to sell those little ones in the department stores. The workers there would always say, "Are you sure you want this one?" They stopped selling them in stores after they found out they carry salmonella. For some reason, the Lord has always protected me. I should have died so many times from different things that happened in my life. LOL..Maybe HE is always going, "NO! I'm not dealing with you up here now!" hahahahahahahaha I sure hope and pray we are called up soon. Every day, I say "Lord, today would be a good day, wouldn't it?"
