I found it with the help of the nice folks at the AW Tozer Theological Seminary in Redding CA. Dr. Leron Heath supplied the address (70th and Union) and rather than venturing there myself, I decided to check the quality of the Google Street View images first. They were taken on what looks to be a beautiful day, so I decided to go with those instead of images of the church with dirty snow all around (which is what all of Chicago looks like right now) You'll notice a few quirks with the GSV photos, but overall, not too shabby.
Tozer began his 30 years as Pastor of The Southside Alliance Church in 1928, in a converted garage: The new Southside Alliance Church was finished in 1941:
Finally, here's the view from the front:
Somehow, I'd imagined a more majestic edifice, like St Paul's across the street, but considering Tozer's low profile personality, this seems more like the perfect fit.

Wow! Those are some really neat pictures, Jim. They're very clear too. I didn't know that's where Tozer began his ministry at. That's very interesting. I would have pictured something more like you did.

He has a great little book on prayer, wish I still had it. Just a small paper back, but his explanation on praying in Jesus name changed my prayer life....
Found it hidden in the cheap section of a christian book store, the best buck 1.95 I ever spent!

I think we should thank the driver of the GSV car for venturing into that neighborhood. That particular intersection may not be bad ... it's getting to it that's the problem.

Yeah, I can just imagine what it's like getting there. dpr, lol...that really made me laugh. I'm like that too. Best buck .95 I ever spent. Sometimes you find real treasures in sections like that.

...that church looks like a miniature version of the Temple. It's odd that people do that. I wonder what Tozer thought about Israel?

okay, so I googled to try to find that out, and came across a raging debate over Tozer's beliefs about salvation... apparently he was Arminian, and that makes him a "false teacher".
*facepalm*

I found an article that might answer that question. OUR DEBT TO ISRAEL by Dr. A. W. TozerQuite the intellectual debate, I gather. Good observation ... I agree (after googling an image of it)

His church was in Oak Lawn. This chrch (70th and Union) is not. It is in Chicago (Englewood). It is now St. Paul’s Missionary Baptist Church. One of my former church members was AW Tozer’s organist (Paul Hendershott, now deceased) and Paul told me that the Oak Lawn church building no longer existed.

Mike, Pastor Tozer left the church in 1959. Maybe it was still at 70th and Union or, by then, meeting at their temporary location in Evergreen Park. The Oak Lawn church did not break ground until 1960. I attended there in the 80's.

Back in 1957 when I was a nursing student in Chicago, I was privileged to attend services at Dr. Tozer's church. It definitely was at 70th and Union. What a commanding presence he had on the platform. His gaze was piercing and astute. His preaching powerful!
