So, I was reading earlier today and didn't know where to read. I was just sort of flipping through books of the Bible. I ended up in Psalms. Here's a question for everyone. What is your favourite Psalm? I know it's hard to decide because they're ALL wonderful. This one has always been mine. Psalm 139
You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. 2 You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. 3 You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. 4 Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely. 5 You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.
7 Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? 8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. 9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, 10 even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. 11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,” 12 even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.
13 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. 15 My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. 17 How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them! 18 Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand— when I awake, I am still with you. 19 If only you, God, would slay the wicked! Away from me, you who are bloodthirsty! 20 They speak of you with evil intent; your adversaries misuse your name. 21 Do I not hate those who hate you, Lord, and abhor those who are in rebellion against you? 22 I have nothing but hatred for them; I count them my enemies. 23 Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

When I looked through the Psalms in my Bible to reply to this thread, I saw that I had highlighted just quite a few verses of Psalm 34, but my favorite is: The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed spirit. Psalm 34:18 I normally only highlight things in my Bible when it feels like the Lord is showing it to me personally at the time, so it means a lot because each time I go back through I see how much He has comforted me through the years.

Psalm 45.
When I was 12, my mother noted that I liked poetry, and made an off-the-cuff suggestion that I should read the book of Psalms. I did - although through the process, I re-wrote them in rhyme (I know, I know). Regardless... Psalm 45 was one that stuck with me, primarily because it's from the perspective of a writer heralding the King.
The first verse, 45:1, is written inside the cover of pretty much every book I've ever used to write in.
Now, of course, I can see that this is a 2nd Coming Psalm - talking about the coronation of the Great King, here on earth. "Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever", and so on. Here it is.

There are so many wonderful Psalms, and I just can't choose a favorite - sometimes it would depend on what was going on in my life, what my need was. I know it wouldn't be one of the imprecatory Psalms - these aren't O.T. times, and I'm not Jewish.
Benjamin, you must have been the most interesting child.

My favorite Psalm is the one the Lord gave me during one of my most fiery trials when I cried out to Him for guidance, comfort and peace of heart. Our Lord is so Merciful & Loving. Psalm 91
Safety of Abiding in the Presence of God
91 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.” 3 Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler And from the perilous pestilence. 4 He shall cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler. 5 You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, Nor of the arrow that flies by day, 6 Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.
7 A thousand may fall at your side, And ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not come near you. 8 Only with your eyes shall you look, And see the reward of the wicked.
9 Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge, Even the Most High, your dwelling place, 10 No evil shall befall you, Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling; 11 For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways. 12 In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone. 13 You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra, The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.
14 “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name. 15 He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. 16 With long life I will satisfy him, And show him My salvation.”

And I do love Psalm 139 because of the intimacy of it. It is so beautiful. There are so many lovely Psalms.
Don't you rather find this like picking your favorite child?

That's an interesting way to put it, Liz. I can honestly say, we don't have a favourite child. We can't stand either one of them. lolololol..I'm only kidding. Sorry, I had to stick a joking thing in there. They both have different qualities and talents that we love. They are both unique, gifted in different areas and we never cared about what they aspired to be but encouraged them in their interests. Our only prayer was that they would come to know the Lord and believe in Him and what He has done for all of us. The Lord answered that prayer and we are so thankful to Him to this very day.

Favourite Verse: Psalm 100

Post by nana on Mar 15, 2014 13:30:01 GMT
I agree that it's hard to choose just one. Psalm 100 has always been one of my favorites, though:
Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before Him with joyful songs. Know that the Lord is God. It is He who made us, and we are His; We are His people, the sheep of His pasture.
Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and praise His name. For the Lord is good and and His love endures forever; His faithfulness continues through all generations.

I think I lost my post in cyberspace... Take 2!
Psalm 107
23 Some went out on the sea in ships; they were merchants on the mighty waters. 24 They saw the works of the Lord, his wonderful deeds in the deep. 25 For he spoke and stirred up a tempest that lifted high the waves. 26 They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths; in their peril their courage melted away. 27 They reeled and staggered like drunkards; they were at their wits’ end. 28 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. 29 He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. 30 They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven. 31 Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind.

I just love that I can visualize this psalm. It talks of desperation, and shows how the Lord is merciful toward those who make foolish decisions when they turn to Him for help.

All these psalms that you guys have mentioned are great, but I have to go with Shiloh's Psalm 139 as my favorite. I also love Psalm 51. Shows the repentant heart of David. No wonder he was called "a man after God's own heart." No matter what sins that David did in his life, he recognized the mercies of God and knew Him intimately.

Psalm 90. It was written by Moses after that unpardonable sin that caused that generation to die off in the wilderness.
It was a fascinating time in history. God had done so much for the people yet they were ungrateful and disobedient. God's love for them did not change even when they crossed the line with Him. And Moses addresses God on their behalf knowing full well that they would all die in the wilderness.

I love the book of Psalms, there are so many wonderful verses. All of them mentioned here are ones I like to read. One of my favorites is Psalms 46, and of that Psalms, I like verse 10:
10 Be still, and know that I am God:
I will be exalted among the heathen,
I will be exalted in the earth.
There have been many times I have needed to be still, and remember that He is God and He is in control.

Psalm 119. I'm not going to bother quoting it, it has 176 verses. But it is FULL of the Psalmist making mention of how he meditates, loves, and reads God's Law all day - a lovely habit the Church needs to adopt in a big way. Read. Your. Bible.
