How Has Bashar al-Assad Held On For So Long?Expert on Syria reveals Assad's brutal secrets to staying in power so long despite civil war in exclusive interview. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has defied the predictions of many by staying in power through a three year internecine civil war, grabbing back territory from opposition forces, and getting away with war crimes of systematic torture under the international community's nose. In an exclusive interview with Arutz Sheva, Prof. Eyal Zisser, an expert on Syria and Lebanon and Dean of the Humanities Faculty at Tel Aviv University, argues that Syria is a unique case. Zisser stressed that Assad has managed to stay in power so long precisely because he was not deposed immediately, noting the complexity of divisions among the Syrian population and staunch support of Assad among certain parts of the Syrian population despite the chaos, all of which prevented a timely ouster. I've often wondered about this also, because in other countries it doesn't take long to oust the Leaders, but Assad seems to be able to hold onto his position. The only thing I know is that in Scripture God says, He is the one who places Kings, and the one who displaces them, so Assad is still there because God has him in that position for His own reasons which could very well be the Isaiah 17 scenario...my thoughts only.

A true leader would have stepped down once he realized his presence was doing more harm than good. I agree with you LS that if he is there, that is who God has in place for end-times.

And He changeth the times and the seasons: He removeth kings, and setteth up kings: He giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding: (Daniel 2:21)
