"Jerusalem police arrested a rabbi and his student on Friday for trying to slaughter and sacrifice a female donkey." Fair use for educational and discussion purposes

Saw this last night and thought it was an interesting one. If sacrifice is established again anytime soon (through rebuilding the Temple), I suspect a lot of people will be against it, especially animal rights activists. I felt sorry for these two when I read they confessed to it, though, I mean they could have lied about it, but chose to tell the truth. I hope the Lord opens their eyes.

You're right, John. I pray for the time when the Lord will open their eyes. I have to say, I never heard of a female donkey (or male, for that matter) being slaughtered as a sacrifice for sins in Israel. That was news to me. Isn't the usual protocol a lamb (which was/is Jesus) or doves?..or can it be any animal? I know the lambs had to be without blemish.

I think that there are a few more animals that they could use to sacrifice. In addition to lambs and doves, some that I can think of are young cows, young bulls, young goats, and rams as well. Leviticus 9 names some at the beginning. I can't remember right now if there were any other animals. Lambs are typical of at least Passover, as you know. Jesus was crucified at the time of Passover, so I think that's why the Word calls Him the "Lamb." Unless I'm forgetting something else, of course.
But yes, donkeys were mainly used for transportation back then, not sacrifices, as far as I'm aware. So that is strange.

...just going through Leviticus on this one, and:
- Bulls are offered for the Sin Offering for the whole community or for priests - Goats are offered for other types of leaders (male goats only) - Female goats and/or lambs are offered for "ordinary" people (or doves or pigeons, if the person is poor).
Nowhere that I'm aware of are donkeys permitted for sacrifices. ...odd story, isn't it.

I don't know why I had this thought but something struck me when I read that article. I couldn't help but think of Jesus riding a lowly donkey into Jerusalem before His Crucifixtion. I kept thinking about that and I know He was fulfilling prophecy but donkeys are humble creatures as was Jesus.
