PASSOVER
April 14-22, 2014
As we prepare for a particularly interesting Passover season, we are reminded of the precise detail with which Creator God instructed His chosen people to worship Him. Too often, Christians miss many blessings due to a lack of understanding of the Seven Levitical Feasts.
Today’s guest post was written by our friend, Paul. The following is his introduction to the Passover study:
“So you think we keep time the way that God designed it? We don’t. We track months and years by a system implemented by the Caesars and Popes. This system is not same as the one prescribed by God to Moses and Aaron in Exodus 12. In this chapter of the Bible, as well as three other books of the Law, He provided a system by which His people could track time that Paul later referred to as a “shadow of what is to come.”
Although normally hard, if not impossible, to blend the two calendar types together and figure out where we are, this year, God has made it simple. This year, He put His calendar in sync with the one we normally use, so that all we have to do is look at the days given in Exodus 12, Leviticus 23, and elsewhere, and see exactly when our Savior (The Lamb) was crucified to pay the debt for our sins; once, and for ALL. But that’s not all. This year, God will mark the day (April 14), with a full moon that is blood-red.”

Time, Made Simple
By Paul L.
Whether you think about it or not, we are Gregorian. Our method of tracking months and years was given us by the Catholic Church, under Pope Gregory XIII in the 16th Century, which was an amendment of the Roman calendar , reformed under Julius Caesar in the 1st Century B.C. Therefore, ours is called the Gregorian calendar. It is a solar based calendar, in that dates are
based on the earth’s position relative to the sun.
Sometime near the end of the 14th Century B.C., God gave Moses and Aaron His way of marking time. Prior to this, God’s people had already established their method for keeping time based on the Creation story in Genesis 1, with days beginning at sunset, months with the sighting of the new moon, and years by the position of the sun. Then, as documented in Exodus 12:2, while still in Egypt, after the hail plague took out the flax and barley but not the wheat and spelt (they ripen late), God told them that it was at that time that they were to begin their new year. But He didn’t stop with starting their clock. He then told Moses and Aaron how to read it. The details are provided us in Exodus 12, 23, 31, and 34; Leviticus 23; and Number 28 and 29; and Deuteronomy 16. As I understand, it goes something like this.
The 7th day of every week is a Sabbath rest; do no work; set it apart to God. Each year, there are three, week long festivals: Unleavened Bread; Firstfruits (a.k.a. Harvest,Weeks or Pentecost); and Booths (a.k.a. Tabernacles or Ingathering). The associated days and events with these are as follows:
1st Month
14th day-Passover - remember the deliverance from bondage
15th-21st day-Festival of Unleavened Bread-remove leaven from your home
15th day–High Sabbath-no servile work
21st day–High Sabbath-no servile work
22nd day-begin counting 7 Sabbaths (weeks)
3rd Month
6th-12th day-Festival of Weeks-Bring in the first fruits of the harvest as an offering
6th day (1st day of the festival)-Sabbath-no servile work
7th Month
1st day-Day of Trumpets-sacred blowing of the trumpets
1st day-Sabbath-no servile work
10th day-Day of Atonement-afflict your beings (fast?), do no work
15th-21st day-Festival of Booths-native Israelites live in temporary dwellings for 1 week
15th day (1st day of the festival)-Sabbath-no servile work
22nd day (day after the last day of the festival)-Sabbath-no servile work
(Note that of all of God’s appointed times, The Day of Trumpets is the only one whichyou cannot know, until the day is upon you, because it occurs on the day that two witnesses in Jerusalem observe the new moon.)
49th Year, 7th Month, 10th Day-on theDay of Atonement;announce the Year of Jubilee; the 50th Year
Paul indirectly reminds Christians to pay attention to these times because they are or were a“shadow of what is to come” (Colossians 2:17). The council of Nicaea determined that this
method of time-keeping is Jewish and not for The Church, essentially tossing out that portion of the Bible.
Since we operate on a schedule that God did not design, by a method that He did not prescribe, if we do make the attempt to use His lunar-based schedule, it is made difficult by the square peg in a round hole blending of solar (the one with which we are comfortable) and lunar calendars. Typically, the months just don’t line up. In some years, Passover and Easter aren’t even in the same month. Now if Jesus was the Passover Lamb, and He was (John 1:29,36; Rev. 5:8,12,13; Rev. 13:8), how strange is it that the Christian Church will celebrate His death and resurrection on days that are sometimes a full month away from the documented anniversary of the event? It is almost like the Roman Pontiffs have set out to change the appointed times (Daniel 7:25)!
But this year is different. The new moon made its appearance on March 31, meaning that the new month and year, God’s new year, began on April 1. This means we Christians have no
excuse this year for not following God’s time line. He made it simple, just for us. So mark your Gregorian calendars, the anniversary of The Savior taking away our sins with His blood,
is April 14. And just to give us something to ponder this year, the day after Passover, when we are to remove leaven from our homes, the full moon is going to be blood red.
