What does anyone else think that Jesus meant when He said this to the Father? Jesus knew He came to die for us sinners. So, what was the cup? Was it the cup of bearing the sins of mankind?
"..And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” (Matthew 26:39)

I just thought about something when I was talking to the Lord. Could it be because He is Holy, the perfect Lamb of God, without spot or blemish, that it was more painful for Him to bare the sins of the world (every vile sin) than it was to die in the physical sense? I'm just having quite a little conversation with myself over here, aren't I? hahahaha

"This cup is the new covenant in my blood..."
You've already hit the nail on the head. The cup is the crucifixion, but not in narrow physical terms.
Jesus echoed Psalm 22, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" on the cross for that precise reason... not only did He suffer physically, not only did He bear the weight of the sins of the world, but He found Himself forsaken by the Father. The indivisible God, divided at the cross - and Christ, the spotless Lamb, caught up between Heaven and earth - Heaven, where God the Father turned His face away, and earth, where "He came unto His own, and they knew Him not".
..."this cup is the new covenant in my blood."

That is a passage I have thought about sporadically over the years. I like your explanation Benjamin, it rings true.

Excellent explanation Benjamin, that's pretty much how it's been interpreted, and the only explanation that brings truth surrounding His Crucifixion.

God's wrath as foreshadowed in the Old Testament? A good reminder for me to once again thank Jesus for drinking my cup. Habakkuk 2:16 - Ezekiel 23:31-34 - Psalm 11:6 Edit: Great thread, Shiloh.

It would be interesting to look at the use of the word "cup" throughout Scripture. It would be revealing in this sense, I think.
LS has quoted a few in regards to judgement, but there's also Psalm 116:13: "I will take up the cup of salvation, And call upon the name of the Lord."
It looks very much as though there is a consistent picture throughout Scripture of a "cup" being representative of God's wrath - but Psalm 116 has this hint that it's salvation, too.
Just one more prefiguration of Christ in the Old Testament - that God's wrath and salvation would meet in the one who drank that cup. Amazing.
